Dandyism. ¶ I didn’t grow up having many role models for masculine aesthetics. What I learned, I mostly leaned from queer culture, specifically butch culture, and history. I’ve never had a lot of money, but I’ve made do and found my own way, my own expression. ¶ When I worked at GQ, I was lucky to get lots of free ties and other accoutrement. Somehow over five decades, I’ve collected over a hundred ties. Dozens of pocket squares. A dozen suits. A couple of tuxedos. My style grows and changes every year, but I always love tweed, purples, lavenders, and mixing patterns irresponsibly.
